Alumni

Madeline Richter, BS

Madeline graduated from the University of Iowa with her B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation and is now pursuing a M.S. in Health and Human Physiology, Sub-Track Child Life. She worked in the lab as a Graduate Research Assistant and served as the Child Life Specialist during the Offspring Study visits. She is now completing her internship and will seek a position as a Child Life Specialist. She hopes to continue her passion for helping children and their families as they navigate and cope with medical procedures. 

Taylor Marske, BS

Taylor worked in the lab as the research study coordinator of the Offspring Study. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Public Health from the University of Minnesota. 

Emma Nierengarten, BS

Emma worked in the lab as an undergraduate research assistant while pursuing her BS in Health and Human physiology on the pre-PA track. She is currently enrolled in Des Moines University's Physician's Assistant program. 

Sehansa Karunatilaka, BS

Sehansa worked in the lab as an undergraduate research assistant while pursuing her BS in Health and Human Physiology on the Pre-Med track. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Clinical Anatomy program at the University of Iowa and plans to attend medical school in the future.

Lisa VanWiel, DPT, PhD

Lisa is a fourth year PhD candidate and Doctor of Physical Therapy. She received a BA in Health and Human Physiology from the University of Iowa in 2015, and DPT from St. Ambrose University in 2018. She enjoys teaching, CrossFit, and spending time with her husband and children. Her clinical and research interests lie in maternal healthcare and improving birthing persons ability to return to and participate in fitness.

Jacob Gallagher, PhD

Jacob worked in the lab as a postdoctoral trainee. He is now a tenure-track faculty member at Iowa State University.

Leah Bergmann

Leah worked in the lab as a Graduate Research Assistant while pursuing a MS in Health and Human Physiology: Sub-Track Child Life. She is now completing her internship and then will seek a position as a Child Life Specialist.

Jaclyn Dzierwior, PhD

Jackie completed her MS with thesis and PhD in the lab. She is now a Postdoctoral Researcher at Northwestern University. 

Kenzie Unke, MS

Kenzie completed her MS with thesis in the lab. She is now working as a clinical trial assistant at Endogenex in Minneapolis. 

Katie Gutsell, BS

Katie completed her BS in Human Physiology on the Pre-Physician Assistant track. She is currently taking a gap year and plans to attend a Physician Assistant program.

Raegan Krumboltz, BS

Raegan worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the lab and is now in Medical School. 

Maya Greer, MS

Maya worked in the lab as a Graduate Research Assistant while pursuing a MS in Health and Human Physiology: Sub-Track Child Life. She is now working as a Child Life Specialist.

Melissa worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Dr. Whitaker and is now a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Oakland University. 

Dong Zhang, PhD

Dong worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Dr. Whitaker and is now faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Minsuk Oh, PhD

Minsuk received his PhD working with Dr. Whitaker and is now a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education as Seoul National University of Education in South Korea.

Piroska Boros, PhD

Piroska received her PhD working with Dr. Whitaker and is now an Associate Professor at the University of the Ozarks.

Courtney Becker, BS

Courtney worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant with Dr. Whitaker and is now in the number one ranked Physician Assistant Program at Iowa.

Madeline Lawrence, MS

Madeline received her MS working with Dr. Whitaker and is now a Lecturer at St. Ambrose while also running her own wellness company.

Rachel Ryan, BS

Rachel worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant with Dr. Whitaker and completed a Physician Assistant Program at Stanford. She is now a Physician Assistant in Neurocritical Care at Stanford Healthcare.

Hailee Talbot, BS

Hailee worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant with Dr. Whitaker and completed the Master of Graphic Design Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is now the Associate Director for Business and Donor Engagement at the University of Georgia.

Laney Muntz, BS

Laney received her BS in Human Physiology on the Pre-Medicine track and completed medical school. Her goal is to work as a physician in the field of women’s health or emergency medicine. 

Paige Lewis, BS

Paige received her BS in Psychology on the pre- PA track and is now attending PA school at Des Moines University.

Karima Mohammed, BS

Karima received her BS in Human Physiology on the pre-medicine track with minors in Spanish and Lifestyle Medicine. Her goal is to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. During her gap year she plans to continue working as a PCT, spend time with family, and travel!
